Dumbell Sets
Dumbbells (along with kettlebells) are about the most versatile piece of exercise equipment you can own. If you are interested in doing any form of resistance training it is essential that you have some dumbbells. The most cost effective way to start or expand your dumb bell collection is to buy a set.
Most sets come with two or more bars and a variety of weights. This allows you to quickly create a pair dumbbells with exactly the weights you need. If you can afford it, I would suggest getting at least 4 bars, as this allows you to have two sets ready to go, when you are doing routines involving alternating sets. For example, alternating tricep curls with floor press - these require different weights, so it would be extremely annoying to have to keep changing the weights between each set.
There are also many weight sets available which include a bar bell as well as a dumbbell. This is also a good way to get started, however, at some point you will still need to expand your collection with a dumbbell set! So, please have a look at the selection below and happy lifting!
One last thing...
You will see that there are two main types of dumbbells - one-piece metal or neoprene/plastic coated non-adjustable, and adjustable.
I do recommend having both, for this reason: non-adjustable dumbbells are useful for applications where you will be moving the weight around quickly. For example, while doing aerobics videos which require weights, or holding while you do shadow boxing.
In this type of activity, you will not want to use adjustable dumbbells because they will either come loose or make a lot of noise. Plus they are uncomfortable to hold. I definitely recommend the neoprene-coated ones for aerobics and such.
So, you will most likely want to stick with light weights (up to about 10-12 lb) in the non-adjustable type. And use adjustables for heavier weights.
Also, there is no real need to buy the expensive adjustable type (e.g. ProForm and Stamina) unless you have money to burn. Yes they are quicker to adjust, but the York-style sets are just fine and are much easier on your wallet!
